History of the Party
Founded on April 11, 2004, in Katrinholm, Sweden, the Somali Social Unity Party (SSUP) emerged from a collective of patriotic Somali intellectuals and politicians. This political party champions a vision of a united and prosperous Somalia, built upon a foundation of core democratic principles.
The SSUP’s founding principles are deeply rooted in the belief that a thriving Somalia can only be achieved through:
- Consultation and Consensus: The party emphasizes the importance of inclusive dialogue and collaborative decision-making, ensuring that all voices within Somali society are heard and considered.
- Free and Fair Elections: The SSUP advocates for a transparent and democratic electoral process that guarantees the right of all eligible citizens to freely choose their leaders.
- Power-Sharing: Recognizing the diverse ethnic and regional makeup of Somalia, the party believes in a system of governance that ensures equitable power-sharing among all segments of society.
- Equality and Justice: The SSUP is committed to fostering a society where all individuals, regardless of their background, have equal opportunities and access to justice.
- Freedom of the Press: The party upholds the fundamental right to freedom of expression and believes in an independent and vibrant media landscape that holds those in power accountable.
- Upholding Somali Identity: The SSUP strives to preserve and promote Somali culture, traditions, and values while respecting the religious and cultural diversity within the nation.
The SSUP’s vision extends beyond the political sphere. The party aims to contribute to the social, economic, and cultural development of Somalia, working towards a future where all citizens can live in peace, dignity, and prosperity.
